Arriving by plane
Vorarlberg does not have its own airport, the arrival by plane is via the nearby international airports of Zurich (CH) and Munich (DE). The arrival via Austrian airports (Vienna, Salzburg, Innsbruck) is also possible, but these are somewhat further away from Dornbirn than the airports of Zurich and Munich.
Journey via smaller airports in neighboring Switzerland (Altenrhein) or Germany (Friedrichshafen, Memmingen) can also be considered, however, these airports are only served by smaller airlines.
Local traffic
Both in Vorarlberg, as well as in Dornbirn, the public transport network is very well developed. Due to its central location in Dornbirn, the FHV is also easily accessible on foot. The FHV can be reached from the train station in Dornbirn in about 20 minutes on foot, from the city center is the FHV about 10 minutes walk away.

While the main focus of the 4th International GaAs Quantum Dot Workshop will be on scientific exchange, participants are warmly invited to explore the beautiful surroundings of Dornbirn in their free time. The region offers a wide range of individual sightseeing opportunities – from nature experiences to cultural highlights – perfect to unwind after an inspiring day of talks and discussions.
Suggested individual activities around Dornbirn:
- Karren Cable Car: Enjoy a short ride up to the local mountain with breathtaking panoramic views over Dornbirn, Lake Constance, and the Swiss Alps (18 min walking distance from FH or take the bus route 177 to ‘Karrenseilbahn’)
- Lake Constance (Bodensee): Stroll along the lakefront, take a boat trip, or simply relax by the water (via train from Dornbirn Bahnhof to Bregenz Bahnhof)
- Rappenloch and Alploch Gorges: Discover one of the largest gorges in Central Europe, just minutes from FHV (take the bus route 177 to Ebnit Unteres Rappenloch, good hiking shoes recommended)
- Medieval Feldkirch: A charming old town nearby with historic buildings, small cafes and Schattenburg Castle
- Bregenz: Famous for its lakeside opera stage, this town on Lake Constance offers art, culture, and lake views.
- Pfänderbahn: Take the cable car from Bregenz up to the Pfänder mountain, the most famous viewpoint over Lake Constance, with panoramic vistas of 240 alpine peaks
